‘I suspect a RAM deficiency that’s causing the CPU and motherboard to fall over! You should perform a full cloud backup before attempting the system restore!’
Not a ‘Star Wars’ sound bite; but an extract from a support call with a well known computer supplier. My teenage son might have followed this, but I wonder how the dairy farmer coped on that call as he stared ‘baffled’ into his monitor.
The world of technology isn’t alone in its use of buzz words and odd, confusing terms. The Greek and Latin derived words of medics and dusty legal speak from time-worn old Chambers is hard to follow and understand.
Here’s the thing though.... In the main ‘Geek Speak’ has simply been made up! Some words are deliberately daft! spam...GUI...dongle all made up by techies for fun! (with a little help from Monty Python).
These words are also very useful tools for use or abuse by the sales guy to extract your hard earned sheckles for that new ‘i-thingy’ or laptop. The support chap may even use strange expressions to summon up the spirits of deepest, darkest IT wizardry when helping you send that photo in an email to your daughter at uni. You’ll probably have to pay him handsomely for his alchemy too!
Or do you??? At Malmesbury Computer Services we choose to speak in plain English.
Whether you have an email issue at home or a major internet problem at the office, we deliver
jargon free, affordable IT advice and support for small business and home users in the
South Cotswolds area.
